The Pilot Health Group!
The six sophomores in Pilot are all doing Health together independently (but not really, because we have all been collaborating and meeting with our mentor, Kayla).
Meeting with Kayla
It has been amazing to have Kayla as a mentor. She does abdominal bodywork and massage, and she has written a PHD dissertation on health education, so she is the perfect mentor for the Pilot Health group. Meeting with Kayla has made Pilot Health really fun, and she has taught us so much about our bodies, anatomy, the uterus, periods, self-care, energy balance, reproductive justice and the history of women's health, and alternative healthcare. I hope that we can continue to meet with her in Semester 2 and keep learning more from her!
Health Education and Rights Website
As we met with Kayla, the Pilot Health Group began to talk a lot about how we were learning important information about our bodies that not very many people knew. It started with her teaching us that uterus misalignment can be a cause of period cramps, and that there are ways to help re-align your uterus and possibly lessen the cramps. This was information that was important for people to know, but it was hard to find online. And so we created a website, our collective health portfolio, with all of the information that we learned from Kayla, as well as resources for people so that they can learn what we have learned.
Posters
As a way to educate others about what we have been learning from Kayla, the Pilot Health Group decided to make posters. Below is the poster Ella and I made about period cramps, which we hung up in some of the school bathrooms. The next poster that we are working on will help promote our Health Education and Rights Website.
