One of my main English projects this semester was my fragmented memoir project. I read several memoirs, and then I was inspired to write my own, but I didn't feel like I had experienced enough of my life to write a full memoir. So I decided to write a memoir in fragments, which made it a more achievable project and made it easier for me to add on to it later when I have more events and experiences that I would like to include. I read and took notes on the memoirs Brown Girl Dreaming, Ordinary Hazards, Educated, and Dawn Again (and talked to some authors - more about these in the Books section). Then I drafted my memoir fragments.
My memoir fragments are short individual writing pieces of specific memories, some of which are poems or in verse. This semester I wrote the first drafts of the fragments, and I started to revise them but I am going to continue that process in Semester 2, and then I will organize and compile them into my fragmented memoir.
Many of my memoir fragments focus on COVID and the flood this summer, because those were two very big events that I experienced and was affected by. A lot of the fragments about COVID are written in verse because that was an easier way for me to capture them while I remembered less details - one of the most challenging parts of this project so far has been remembering things! The other memoir fragments are memories that I wanted to write about that represent my "normal life", to contrast with the memories from COVID and the flood.
